Advancing Women’s Leadership in Energy, Mining, and Sustainable Development in South Africa

G100 South Africa – Strategic Meetings alongside Africa Energy Indaba 2026, 3 – 5 March

Through the G100 Global Women Leaders platform, Women in Mining Africa (WiM Africa), in collaboration with Women in Management, Business and Public Service South Africa (WiMBIZSA), participated in the Africa Energy Indaba exhibition. WiM Africa extended an invitation to WiMBIZSA to share the exhibition space, creating an opportunity for both organisations to jointly engage with stakeholders and present their work in advancing women’s participation in sustainable resource sectors across the continent.

The three-day exhibition provided a platform to showcase initiatives related to mining, ESG, logistics, agribusiness, and sustainable community development. Through the shared stand, both organisations highlighted the growing role of women in shaping responsible resource management and sustainable economic participation, while also demonstrating the value of partnerships that strengthen women’s leadership across resource-driven value chains in Africa.

Throughout the exhibition, representatives engaged with industry stakeholders, ESG professionals, policymakers, entrepreneurs, and emerging graduates interested in opportunities within the mining, energy, and sustainability sectors. These engagements created opportunities to exchange ideas, discuss industry challenges, and explore ways to expand women’s participation in sectors critical to Africa’s economic growth and environmental sustainability.

The collaboration between WiMBIZSA and WiM Africa proved complementary and impactful. WiM Africa brought a strong continental footprint across more than 36 African countries, advocating for women’s inclusion in mining, while WiMBIZSA highlighted its focus on advancing women’s economic participation in sustainable mineral extraction, logistics value chains, agribusiness, and community development.

The joint presence enabled both organisations to communicate a broader message: that women-led initiatives are playing a vital role in responsible resource development while contributing to sustainable local economies. The experience also underscored the practical value of the G100 platform in connecting organisations with aligned missions and enabling collaboration in visible sector forums.

A recurring theme during discussions with visitors, particularly students and young professionals, was the need for clearer pathways into ESG and sustainability-related careers within the mining and energy sectors. Overall, participation in the Africa Energy Indaba strengthened partnerships and reinforced the importance of women’s leadership in building sustainable, responsible, and inclusive resource sectors across Africa.
